Medred's ADA 60P: BONSAI!

Another day... another ADA... *sigh

See, this is why having spare aquarium equipment is problematic! My new 75P was supposed to be my sole FW tank. Well, having to wait to get it started just gave me the itch to utilize my old 60H stand and equipment.

I apologize ahead of time for not writing up or taking pictures of anything during the process. I was so focused that I just realized I should even post a thread!

I'm doing a dry start with a humidifier hooked up as a fogger. Here's a teaser pic:

it's blue because i'm using a 14K halide (It's nowhere near that blue in real life) until i can get my hands on a 10K lamp.

Nice. What did you use for the plant on the bonsai?

Thanks man! I plan on doing more bonsai in the 75P, but with moss. I decided to be a little adventurous with this tank. It's not as planned out as the 75P will be. This is just to dip my toe back in the water.

Where did you snag your bonsai?

Excellent scape.

Top down of what this currently looks like:

A lot of the HC died back converting to fully emersed including emersed roots. A couple of patches didn't initially make it, but I seeded the left over rock wool with a few pieces. All branches now have at least some established growth. I imagine this will look fantastic once it's submerged and completely grows in.

I have some patches I had to nurse back to health after the humidifier showed it was working put wasn't actually putting anything out. There's a 150w halide over this tank, so as you can imagine, things can wither pretty quickly.

I would go ahead and submerge this, but I may be moving soon. I don't know what I'll do with this tank if I do end up moving.

Yea moving it will be tough, depending how long it will take you certainly could at least put the tree in a plastic bag and keep it moist in there for a few days before it starts breaking down. If you add light and a daily mist to the bag you could keep the tree indefinetly. The rest of the tank would be easy enough to break down and reset up drom scratch.

Total bummer though i was looking forward to this scape.

Well, I thought I was moving, so I've just been letting this tank grow out. I may not be moving so I decided I'll flood it. Here's a picture before the flood. The microsword novae grows a lot shorter submerged. I'm not sure If I want to cut it back to get to the proper scale, or just let it grow out as is and let it slowly convert after water is added.

Thanks! It's been sitting around for awhile. I think the key to early success is get the soil moist, and keep it moist, but siphon out standing water. I used a piece of airline tubing attached to a piece of rigid tubing and pushed it down in the sand when siphoning out the standing water. I also fertilized with miracle grow every now and then.

Thank you. I kind of screwed up the left hand side of the tree because my light arm didn't allow the light to be moved far enough to the left the get light over there. Today I extended the bar and moved the light over. Hopefully it fills in.
