My first Bog Garden

Plants are in need to finish edging and hide the liner it's nice and soggy after some rain. Rain barrel is perfect to keep it soaked.

Trying some aquatic ground cover plants

I will try to identify everything I bought everything the day before vacation and planted it quickly without much thought. Still need mulch to cover dirty and edging to cover the liner.

So far it's staying wet and I bought the plants direct from green house whole saler that I live 20 minutes from and they grow all year round in heated green house he owner gave me suggestions

Might try some tropically as well

This is really interesting. If i understand it right the whole purpose is to keep a high water level, basically just below the surface? Which allows the marginal plants to stay wet enough and thrive? How much are you planning for this to fill in with plants? Also is there ever supposed to be standing water in it or is it designed to drain down below the surface level for the most part?

Really looking forward to seeing how this grows in.

It's designed to slow drain any standing water which I do get after a rain and it does drain away from the surface. The peat miss and sand underneath retain moisture well. The top level stays moist long after rain.

I am hoping for plant spread but may get impatient and plant more. I plan to plant more normal non water loving plants on the edges .

So far this experiment is working out well. The real test is in summer how well it works to stay wet.

Looks pretty good so far! You don't often see too many bog gardens, so thank you for posting this and sharing!

Thanks it's been fun trying this out . Many neighbours friends wondered what the hell I was digging.

I wanted some grasses and cattails and ended up buying a lot more plants like day lily's and more marginal pond plants to see how they would do.

This is just after I drained the rain barrel. I dug down to see how wet the soil is and found it's soaked a foot down and water oozes into the hole so the soil is staying wet under neath the mulch.

Grabbed some purple loosestrife from the side of the road but I'm not 100% sure it is.
