Well as of a couple months ago we are now able to send cargo ourselves, the first missions using sing some of the other private designs are only a year or less away from testing, and NASA' is still working on their capsule. Our fleet of shuttles was aging and needed to be replaced with a less expensive vehicle utilizing modern technologies. A temporary loss of transport is worth it in the long run when there are some great things in development
