Returned to the Hobby! 20 Years Later.

Hello all,

I was an aquariest some 20 years ago, but you know how it goes, jobs, moving, kids, a whole host of time spent away.

But some time back I vowed to get back into it, and I made good on it.

Back in the day I never kept a journal, but with smart phones today, I am going to keep track.

Here is my progress thus far:

Day 2:

Day 4:

Day 30:

Day 30 on Top:

Not sure where I am going from here, but plants will be the focus. I have all the fish I will add, except perhaps an African Butterfly Fish.

Anyways, I love this website for ideas, so I figured I would join and share my own experiences as well.

Thanks everyone!

In the 20 years you were gone, you sure didn't lose your touch for aquascaping! Thats a nice looking setup you have there.

20 years is a lot in this hobby. I can't imagine how different it is today compared to when you used to be in the hobby.

Oh!

Just a note, I cycled via the Ammonia only method up until about 10 days ago, when things looked safe, and I did a 90% water change, I slowly added the fish I have now:

9 small brichardi
2 synodontis euptera
3 bristlenose plecos (very small)

Also! They just got planted as bulbs... but there may be some lily pads coming up in the next month. I planted them just behind the wood.

Thank you very kindly! It has sure changed ALOT.

I remember back in the late 80s and early 90s it was mostly rumor and hearsay. Would find a few good books (I have some still today!) and advice from people in person.

I really like that the web has all this information and contact with people we would otherwise never meet and share with.

I am sure it will make me a much better hobbyist!

Welcome back! I took a break from fishkeeping too, for like 10 years I think it was. This forum has taught me SO MUCH, and SO MUCH has changed since I was keeping fish. I'm sure you will find tons of knowledge here just like I did. These forums got me from being a returning amateur to a decent planted tank keeper, hehe. Well...at least I think so.

I love that driftwood! Nice job

Tank has been up since April 19th.

Water Test Results on May 21st:
N03 = 0
N02 = 0
pH = 8.0
KH = 240
GH = 180

I know my pH, KH and GH are all high, this is expected because I am using Well Water and bypassing my water softner (with my Cichlids in mind).

I have added another bar of lights, bring me to the following lighting setup:
Coralife HO 36" (3 bars w/ 2 HO bulbs each)
Front Bar: (1) HO 10K, (1) HO 6.7K
Middle Bar: (1) HO 10K, (1) HO ColorMax
Back Bar: (1) HO 10K, (1) HO Actinic

Additionally, I removed the stock glass lid from my 40B, the hard water deposits were just annoying to deal with.

I am dosing with Seachum Flourish Excel and Seachum Planted Tank Suppliment.
