Plastic Dividers

I was thinking of taking some plastic take-out containers (the semi-transparent ones used for soup, etc.) and cutting them up to use a substrate dividers. Does anyone know if this is OK? Would chemicals from the plastic slowly leech out and harm the plants/animals?

If it's not a good idea, what are some alternatives aside from going to the hardware store to get some plexiglass/acrylic?

Plexiglass and acrylic would be safer. Its been used in aquariums and aquariums/tanks are made from them. When in doubt, avoid. Otherwise you will have to run test and experiment at your own risk.

You can also use plastic eggcrate. You can find it in the lighting section of the hardware store.
