What do you think about this driftwood?

For reference, this tank is 60"x18"x20" (LxWxH), about 85 gallons.

I found a neat looking piece of driftwood at my LFS and I'm thinking about making it the focal point of my aquarium.

I think its a bit too tall (it would be poking out of the water a little bit), so I think I'm going to cut it down 2-3".

What do you guys think?

As long as the glass cover closes, why cut the driftwood?

Lay the substrate around it while it sits on the bottom. Shallow the substrate a little underneath to allow fishes to swim under and it'll be fine.

The top is where the interesting visuals happen, so by cutting it down, I think you are referring to cutting some off the base. Save yourself the trouble and just bury the base where it sits.

If I cut it down, I would remove part of the bottom.

The interesting parts are on the top. It seems like it would make sense to have that part a few inches under water rather than at the waterline, but its hard for me to envision it.

If I were to cut it down, I would probably pile enough gravel around the base to hide the archway.

it has potential to look good depending how you set it and do with it. i personally dont like driftwoods that are nicely cut doesnt look natural to me. all depends how you place it and such.

Uh i don't think I'm good at aquascaping but I think driftwood should either be under the water or poke out of the water but not end at the waterline. I could see this being really cool in a square tank. You'll need to balance the driftwood with something else that's tall...

That's a very nice piece of DW.
IMO, your thought of cutting 2"-3" off the bottom is a good one - I think it would improve the visual impact and overall balance of the piece in the tank. Bottom line is - whatever suits your eye.

I think I'm going to put a smaller, but still major, focal point at the other end of the tank. Not sure what yet, possibly a rock formation?

Still haven't cut it down, but I'm thinking about cutting the left side more so that the top part will facing down instead of being parallel to the bottom of the tank. I think it will look more natural that way.
