Gordon's Fish Room

I'm going to be detailing my escapades regarding the setup of a 1,000 sq.ft. fish room devoted to plants/shrimp/fish.

I have a total of 90+ tanks which will be moved to the new location.
I plan on running an additional 50 tanks.

Things are going to be quite busy over the next month.
Hopefully I'll find time to rest!

Photos to follow in a week or so as the space will be open and free before the 15th.

Having just recently been putting the time and effort into a 75g planted tank I have a serious question. How does one possibly maintain ~150 tanks and do anything else? I mean I'm sure you have equipment to make things as efficient as possible, but still. From your picture I'm guessing you're not retired, so are you perhaps just independently wealthy or do you make money from selling fish/plants that allows you to do this? I don't mean to be nosy, I just can't imagine anyone running 150 tanks with anything short of a normal 40 hour work week.

i think dirted tanks needs alot less maintenance. I know some people with established dirted tanks that only change the water once every 3-6 months and mostly only do top offs and trims, while still maintaining perfect water quality.

Photos to follow during setup ;^)

Not looking forward to all the extra work of breaking things down and then having to set things up again. I'm very happy to be doing this before spring hits though, since a number of them have been shut down for the winter.

Fingers are crossed that I don't break anything during transit, while I have access to an SUV it would take about 20 trips to move the equipment down. Uhaul seems to be the best bet. Using a box truck would mean 2 trips.

It might be more than what a local fish store might have but the location is still going to be shut down to the public.

Maintaining that number of tanks requires someone available 5-6 days per week.
I have been blessed in the past by having family take care of my tanks while away on vacation/away on trips etc.

The question of maintaining all the tanks is a good one, I have a set routine regarding feeding/ferts/water changes. It doesn't take much to mind alot of tanks, you just have to be a little crazy. The tanks aren't high tech, just lazy Gordon Tech.

I am not retired but working twords retirement. I am not independently wealthy and work about 40 hours a week in an office as well as 10 hours per week for another. I also moonlight as a program designer and currently pushing for 12 contracts with the State of New York and a number of Municipalities. Aside from all that work I also dabble on the side working through amazon.com and sell plants/shrimp to help cover my tanks. Not retired at all, just burning the candle at both ends and in the middle. I have no time to socialize in my life and have burned many bridges which is pretty depressing.

Sometimes it gets to be a bit too much, but the new location will help keep a level of organization in the apartment. It would just be a quick stop on the way home Monday/Tuesday/Friday for packing so it will work out well.

Even dirted tanks require more water exchange than once every 3 months unless your tank is filled with plants.

Bed time for me!

Thanks for the detailed response Gordon. I do look forward to seeing some photos of this coming together because it's probably going to be insanely awesome! To be able to work full time+ and still take care of all of that stuff is really quite an impressive feat. I do hope the condensed location and pooling of resources does help you get some free time!

If only I lived in NY, I'd drop by some days to help out just to be around 150+ tanks!
