Online or Local Stores in Bay Area?
Folks in the SF Bay Area,
I was wondering if you have any recommendations for sources of good deals for the following: 1. substrate - any local retailers for Flourite and Onyx or would they be cheaper to get online? 2. CO2 regulator kit - i was looking at the Milwaukee kit at www.aquabuys.com, is this a reliable or good brand or is the JBJ better? I appreciate any bit of info you can share. Thank you! -kyo- |

Are these real?

Hi kyo,
Regarding the Flourite, Petsmart stores match online pricing, so you might be able to get a bag of Flourite locally for an "online price" like $9.99. Both Milwaukee and JBJ are good all-in-one regulator manufacturers. It comes down to personal preference and maybe price.

Hi Wasserpest,
Thanks for your reply. I hope the local petsmarts does that price match you mentioned. I checked petsmart's online store and a 15lb bag of Flourite is $24.95! cheers, -kyo- |

I purchased a Milwaukee regulator from Aquabuys. In less than a yeas the solenoid quit on me. Aquabuys said this was very unusual but since it had been over the six month since I purchased the rig the warranty had expired. They then asked me for a day or so to see what they could do. The next day Aquabuys emailed me w/ a phone number at Milwaukee. The folks at Milwaukee sent me a reconditioned solenoid at no charge. Great service all the way around. Good luck w/ it.

Albany Aquarium sells Flourite at a good price if you buy two bags ($29.99). Otherwise, it's $19.99 for one bag, which, IMHO, is still good. I'm not positive, but I think they have the same pricing on Eco-Complete, although it seems like this product is quickly losing popularity due to its unintentional and undesirable (for most) buffering properties.
Here is their website, if you want to call them and ask about Onyx prices: http://www.albanyaquarium.com/. Take note of their hours. -Naomi |

Family Pets (Corner of Fremont Bl. and Grimmer, across the parking lot from Cloverleaf Bowl) has Flourite for $18/bag. With gas prices what they are it's close to a wash versus driving up to Albany.
As for regulators, I've bought a JBJ off of ebay (last spring) and a Milwaukee from Aquariumplants.com (last August). Both have functioned flawlessly. Do you already have a CO2 Tank? If not you should got to Hansen's Fire Equipment, 536 Lewelling Blvd # C, San Leandro, CA 94579. A filled 10# steel tank goes for $75. A 20# is $95. Refills are about $12 for either size. The down side to them is that they're only open 7am-4pm, M-F. Finally, I must post my obligatory invitation to join the SFBAAPS (San Francisco Bay Area Aquatic Plants Society).
