I have put bamboo shrimp in newly set up QT tanks and fed them with newborn fry food. It has to be extremely tiny, but it works.

Touchι, Ms. Fancy-pants. :p Most people don't want that hassle; they want a self-sufficient shrimp.

LOL! I guess that's true. I mainly wanted to say that it is possible to feed them in a new tank. They won't always die. But they do prefer an older tank for the reasons you stated.

I have fire reds (RCS), amano, and bamboo shrimp in my community tank. There are threadfin rainbows, glass catfish, siamese algae eaters, a pleco, some kuli and dojo loaches and a farawella in the tank. The shrimp colony is thriving. Babies aren't even really hiding. RCS breed very fast. The only fish I have had trouble with are mollies, angels, and clown loaches. The clowns were funny, they would let the colony grow for a few months, then have shrimp night and eat them all. I didn't care, they were cull shrimp.

If you know where to get cardinal shrimp PM me please. I have been looking for them for a while. I have a 30 gallon sitting there waiting on them. It's a gorgeous tank.
