I'm not big on floaters. I like stem plants for the most part. Although I do like moss/anubias/java fern, I have them in my 10g so I want to try something different.

The Fluval Edge pre-filter sponge eats up a lot of room in a tank so small. You may want to consider using black pantyhose or stockings stretched tightly over the intake and tied down with a rubberband. That'll take up less space, look less obtrusive and actually clog less than a sponge would on such a small filter.

As far as lighting goes, nope, definitely won't have a lot of light from the fixture you're choosing. You'd need something with a better reflector like a clamp-style work light ($6 at Home Depot) with a daylight CFL ($3-$4 at the hardware or grocery store).

Alright thanks! I'll look into some lights at home depot too. Will mosses grow in high light or will they melt?

I found the clamp style lights at home depot but it seems like it won't be giving out enough light to all parts of the aquarium based on the angle of it. Maybe I will have to stick with the medium/low light plants

You don't actually clamp the lamp onto the tank but suspend it above the tank.

That will provide uniform lighting.

Ahh I see. In that case, I don't think I'll be able to buy it. I have no way to suspend the light at home and school

Yeah. I put those on my red sea filters but I had to tie the tops tight since they didn't fit perfectly.

If I went the stocking route, would I cut a part of it off to cover the filter? I can imagine needing the whole thing. Then I'm thinking I should tie it with fishing line?

Actually answered that for you above.

You just stretch pantyhose tightly over the intake and can tie it down with string or a rubberband.

But do I take the entire thing or just cut a section of it off?

You don't need the whole stocking. You only need enough to cover the inlet so you would need to cut it to the right length.

Go with the red sea/azoo filter, I love mine. You can use plexiglass as a lid. It might warp a little but not enough to matter because the tank it so small. A 12"x6" piece of plexi shouldnt warp. I use plexi for a 20gal once and that barely warped.

For my 2.5 low tech I have just a plain 14 watt bulb on a typical clip on lamp from ikea, and for filter a HOB with media and floss, which all works well- too well I always need to make sure the light is not on too long or the algae grows!

If you find anything that works well plant wise, give a holler- I've been looking for options myself.
