Want to start a 2.5g - Filter and Lighting Q

Hi all.

I currently have a 2g Fluval Spec I'm using for RCS but I'm kind of unsatisfied with it. I find it really difficult to scape well because of it's shape so I'm thinking I might switch my shrimp over to a spare 2.5g tank I have laying around.

If I do this though, I'm going to need help with a filter and lighting.
I've heard that this strip light http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...ductId=2754547 is designed for 2.5g aquariums. My only issue is what kind of filter and light bulb to use. If that is siting on top of my glass hood, I'm going to have trouble getting a filter in the tank.

My other option I guess is to find a clip on light that will work with that tank and either get a Red Sea Nano filter or a Tetra Whisper 3i. I just want to be able to baffle the intake so my shrimp won't get sucked up, especially if they breed.
Any suggestions for which route will be better? And any recommendations for products I should use, especially if I go the clip on route?

That light strip will work fine with a Red Sea Nano. I use both on one of my moss & snail tanks.

You can use the standard 10w CFLs that are about 5-6" long. They're available for $4-$5 in most pet shops, Walmart and at online retailers.

i would use an ordinary desklight (from target, walmart, etc.) and just put in a compact flourecent. i know home depot sells bulbs that are 6500k, as well as some that are 10000k. both would work fine for plants.
just keep the light a few inches above the center of the tank and your fine.

there are a few filters out there, which as far as i can tell are all the same with a different box. the red sea nano, the azoo palm/mignon would both work great. i just advise not using their crappy filter pads, but rather filling the bottom with biomedia, and then putting some filter floss on top.

I'm worried about using the HOB filter and the light strip without any cover between the water and the light. I don't want it to short out from evaporation :/

@marko- I've considered this too but I'm worried about desk space, I don't want to have it take up too much space on my desk, it's kind of tiny as is. But maybe I just need to look harder for a smaller lamp

goodeye: You should be able to get a piece of acrylic/plexi to use as a cover for less than $2 - even with a cutout to fit the filter.

If you can't get it in your city or town, you can definitely get it via eBay or even here on TPT.

Would I get this at home depot? How thick of a piece should I get?

Plexiglass will eventually warp, so don't spend more than a couple bucks. Typically you can get 5 or 6 pieces cut to fit for about $5. That way you've always got a few extras. Usually 1/8 - 1/4 inch.

Or if you want to do things right, you could spend about $10 and have a glass shop cut something to size.

I don't know of any glass shops around me so I think for now I will go with the plexiglass

What kind of plants would this lighting allow me to have?

The reflector on the fixture is pretty much non-existent (just some white plastic), so even with a great bulb you're probably just looking at low light plants like Anubias, Crypts, mosses.

Aw man, I was hoping it'd allow me something a little more extravagant haha. Maybe some medium light plants?

I have done a high light 2.5g tank with a cfl (all I use on my nano tanks). Also I would definitely go with the red sea filter. To protect the shrimp you can get a prefilter from petsmart.

But I don't think I'll be able to do a high light with my lighting.. Unless it fits two CFLs then maybe. Do you mean a prefilter sponge? The ones fluval makes? I have a few at home

you really only need 1 CFL to get some pretty high lighting

I'd say go Medium light, it really depend on if you want floaters also cause those will take up most the light.
