Between a LiveRock and a Hardscape
Sorry for the crappy pun, but I've had a pretty difficult decision to make and cant seem to come to a choice on my own... I have been overwhelmed with my high tech 125 as it has turned out to be a huge struggle with my c02 canister and fluval 405 breaking... so i am stuck at a crossroad; Do i stick with FW and make a nice planted discus setup? or do I go all out and make a massive reef tank? I already have sufficient lighting on the tank for an LPS reef tank and ive recently become very amused with keeping SW tanks, however it will take a LOT of time\cash to set that sucker up... I've been saving up several paychecks (i work at my LFS
The only downside about running the discus tank would be that my lighting will be far to much (4x 80watt 60" t5HO) for the plants i will be keeping... which will be mostly Java ferns/anubias/crypts. I know this is a huge wall of text and its probably all jumbled up but i am very scatter-minded right now and hopefully i'll receive some input.

Do you enjoy ripping up $100 bills while being a slave to an object? If so, choose saltwater.
Do you enjoy ripping up $10 bills while being less of a slave to an object? If so, choose Discus.

More like $100 bills for discus too. I had a 29 gallon that I set up with two discus and it cost about $500

Haha yeah thats the main reason I was leaning more towards discus... Would an FX5 and a fluval 405 do the trick for proper filtration?

Well I already have everything (except an additional filter) for the discus setup, and i probably will come out even if i sell some extra plants/ driftwood on the SNS since there are some very reputable local discus breeders nearby.

Instead of another cannister why not add a sump to the system, much easier to service.

The minute I can setup my nano Reef I will be doing it. That being said, do what you enjoy and find pleasure in.
