Mold with emersed HC
I'm trying to grow the stuff, but I notice that it gets moldy fairly quickly. The HC doesn't usually die, but the mold stinks and is really ugly. Any way to stop it or remove it?

Obsessed? Maybe

How much water are you keeping in the tank?
How often are you allowing for gas exchange? Those are two big things to consider. Have to be sure the substrate is moist, not wet - with no standing water. And the tank has to be allowed to breathe. That said - spot treatment with Excel or peroxide can work. I tend to mist emersed tanks with a diluted Excel solution when I notice mold/algae/fungal problems.

I'm growing the HC in half yogurt cups (with holes for water exchange) with jiffy pellets in ziplock bags with some water in the bag, and that has the mold on the lower parts of the plants, but the HC still seems to be growing well.
I'm also doing a dry start on a pair of picos that are sealed. Mold in one, although it's not actually touching the HC. The substrate is a bit wetter than I'd like, thought neither have standing water. Lastly, I'm growing HC in a muffin tin, testing out jiffy pellets vs. my garden dirt (garden dirt is winning). Much much drier than the other two, so no mold, but there was a very destructive melt that hit most of the plants. Some survivors are coming back, so I'm hoping that little experiment can continue |
