12 gallon long
What do you guys think about using 12 gallon long Tanks for shrimp???
I know it will give a lot of surface area but not a lot of water volume, I love the way the tank looks. It woul be for CRS and TB shrimp. Please share your thoughts and opinions. Thank you |

CRS, you could if you maintain the water params good and most CRS are fairly hardy nowadays. I've had good colonies going in a 7.5 gal and 10 gal's before. TB's, I'm not sure you would want to keep them in that small of a volume as from reading they don't like change as much. lol.

12G long is fine. Many people have great 12G Mr Aqua scapes in the tanks/journals section.

Shrimp happiness before the looks. I think I will tell my wife I would prefer another 20 gallon long For father's day present, the only bad things about 20 gallon long is finding a nice looking stand.

Why do you think that a 12 gallon tall gives more "water volume" than a 12 gallon long?

Shrimp are pretty easy to keep happy in a 12g tank, no issues here at least. I'm just about done with the "normal" dimension tanks for shrimp. Its fun to watch my shrimp roam the bottom of a 3' tank. It would be pretty cool if they would made a 24g long that is the same length and height but double the width.

Not sure why anyone would think it's tough to maintain shrimp in these Mr. Aqua tanks.
It's my absolute favorite tank. But I also keep Crystals and such in smaller volumes of water with no issues. Anyone who is dedicated and keeps on top of stability can have success. Just takes effort.

20 longs , 40 longs 30 or 40 Breeders are the absolute best shrimp tanks . It give's you lots of room to make mistakes if you are not a perfect shrimp keeper . And who is a perfect shrimp keeper besides Mother Nature . Not to mention maximum visability . Those tanks all have the max surface area for their footprint and water volume . I have a number of 20,30and 40 regulars and would gladly trade them for longs in the same gallon range anyday . Oxygen . I have 20 new tanks to assemble I think will be pefect for shrimp 48x16x16 or about 60 gallon . Now to get motivated to do it ! And I don't want to think about the bill for Cardina substrate with no Akadama available . I am going to remove all my 10's as they are basically useless for producing any numbers of Cardina . I am sure some of you can do it but I am also sure it is easier in a tank with more volume

My only concern was the OP saying they wanted to keep TB's in it. If they keep the param's in check, the temp's nice and cool, I'm sure it's possible. Whether or not they can get a good breeding population going in a 12gal with TB's, I don't know. I haven't kept TB's, just read lots that they do much bigger in bigger tanks and stable params. CRS, not a problem really. As I stated, I have a great population going in a 7.5gal cube.

I tend to err on the side of "stick with larger volumes until you have a lot of shrimping experience" - so I tend to agree with you GeToChKn.
But I love love love this tank for its footprint.

I agree to you both as well. From what I have seen and experienced, the 12G long is good for any Neos, CRS/CBS, OEBT & Tigers. Never really did see anyone whom have kept TB's in it. Good thing you pointed that out
