It's generally good for them, unless you've greatly altered the pH or any drastic changes.

try to test the pH if you can, keeping it stable will prevent deaths in the first couple of weeks.

What is your pH, GH and KH right now? I'm suspecting the pH might be pretty low if you've got yellow water. I have a new piece of DW that's dropping my pH from 7.8 to 7.2 but only because my GH is 6 and KH is 2. When I had a GH of 4 and KH of 0-1, the DW dropped my pH to 6.6 from the 7.8. And I boiled the hell out of mine for three days straight and have no yellow water.

It depends on what the sand is made of, most of the time sand is inert so it won't effect the pH. I have seen some brands of aquarium sand that are made of aragonite which will buffer.

strong maybe. If it is inert, then no. What did the packaging say?

Don't go monkeying around until you know what your params are. Try Amazon for test kits if you can find them locally. You'd probably need to go to the mom & pop LFS to get the kits, I've never seen KH and GH at Petsmart/Co. Make sure to pick up the high range pH test as well as the regular pH kit.

Is your tank fully cycled, btw?

Edit: Oops, now I see that you're in Malaysia and that will complicate things a lot. I don't know if Amazon will ship there. You might want to look at eBay for the kits. There are a LOT of Asia-based sellers of aquarium stuff on there.

You *really* need to know your parameters before you start trying to change them. You could have really hard water, keeping your pH high and adding seashells will only make the water harder and possibly raise the pH more. If the water is too hard, shrimp won't thrive.

I know test kits are expensive but it's for the health and happiness of your shrimp to know what you're dealing with.
