Noisy Eheim 2213
I have not used my eheim for a while because it was being noisy and I figured it was broken. Well I looked at it again because I wanted to get rid of the backpacks that I have. So upon inspection, the porcelain shaft was broken in the impeller. I replaced that and it is still making the noise! I can get it flowing but, it seems like it should be more forceful? I don't know if it is air in the canister or what but, its driving me nuts that I can't get it to be quiet. Could it really be shot, Its really old, I got it used about 7 years ago...

Maybe, or a restriction on the intake, or a bad oring is letting air in, check all the orings and lube them lightly with vasoline.

Check to see how the impeller slides on the new shaft, if there is a lot of play in it, the impeller may be worn on the inside and will need to be replaced.
The only other cause may be improper priming of the the filter and it still has air trapped inside the canister.

The impeller seems fine on the inside.. it is a little worn on the outside but I am not sure its bad enough to make the noise. I can feel whatever the noise is when I put my hand on the top, If that makes sense. What is the best way to prime? I have tried many ways but open for more, I really want to make this filter work, it would be so expensive to replace! I also went over all connections checked all line for obstruction and checked seals.. all looks good. It's got to be air in canister.. I think?

Noise from a canister is almost always trapped air. When it isn't, its impeller issues. There aren't that many parts. ;-)
Slower flow is usually a kinked hose, trapped air or gunk in the hoses. |

When you replaced the shaft, did you replace the impeller also? IME when the shaft has broken, the inner surface of the impeller has also been rounded out into an oval so that it needs replacement as well. Kind of putting a round pin in a square hole otherwise.
For any air that gets hung in the canister, I just tip the canister about 15 degrees and rotate it so that any air will go up and out the outlet. The tubing does have to be installed correctly so that there are no droops in the line. |

It was actually pretty surprising how little flow difference a broken impeller shaft made on my filter, which made the problem so much harder to solve. Then, I am guessing I did enough damage to ruin the impeller in the mean time. My point is to check the impeller. You may have damaged it. I tried to lube mine in hopes of fixing it when it wasn't too bad and it still continued to wear further until it got as loud as it was with a broken impeller shaft with an intact one. Not saying that it is for sure the issue, just saying that it's happened to me.

U wont have to replace the filter, dont worry ur self. Its gota b something simple, its not that complicated of a filter.
Can u stick a finger inside where the impelar sits? Can u c in there with a flash light? Is it smooth and clean? Grab a metal coat hanger or piece or wire or something and poke into the output in the pump head. Do this on both sides, the inside the filter part, and the outside the filter where hose connects (mine was really plugged up there tooke me for ever to figure it out. Next the elbow at the bottom of the filter,.run that wire thru there. Do the same on the quick disconects while ur at it. Lube the o ring that is on the elbow, and the red gasket for the pump head.make sure u dont have old gungked up floss in the filter restricting flow, if u have a pre filter clean it. Hook up the intake but not the output. Suck on output to prime. Run filter into a bucked with out the output not hooked up. If its still running slow do u have a kinked hose? Finally put the output back on and if all else fails but a new impellar assembly. Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G using Tapatalk 2 |

Ck all the above suggestions and if you discover its a priming problem....... I found post #2 at this link to be helpful about priming:
http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/eq...im-2215-a.html I have a 2217 and sometimes when I did not get it primed right it made a swishing noise. If everything is right I can not hear it run. |

Thank you all for your help! I will order a new impeller and see if that works. I am going to give it a good cleaning as well. I did a lot of shaking it around to get trapped air out and it still made the noise, so must be impeller.
