Picked up this tank last weekend. Been leak testing it all week

After looking around I decided to forgo the light that came in the hood and just use a dome and spiral 26W CFL 6500K:

So, I needed to modify the top. First was yank out the lighting that was in there:

Then put a hole in it:

I decided that with this foot print (13" x13" x 19.5"H) that I would slope up into the back left corner...requiring an extra deep substrate. So, in order to assist substrate flow and help prevent any anaerobic spots from developing...I put some black aquarium gravel that I bought a few years ago to good use:

Got that rinsed, and after playing with some larger rocks that I have...put in. Then started on the Black Diamond blasting sand from Tractor Supply:

First rinse:

Drain, refill and PRE-stir:

POST-stir:

2nd drain, refill, PRE-stir:

2nd POST-stir:

Round 3 - Post-stir:

I chased that rabbit for a total of 8 rounds of fill, stir, drain, repeat. After adding it to the tank I wound up with this:

There really was no film, but what I found while rinsing it was that the refill is relatively clean and film free...however, as soon as it is stirred up...the film shows up. Didn't really seem to happen in the aquarium though, so hopefully the effort that I put in was worth while.

With the Topfin 30 (came with the tank) it looked like this head on:

So far, this is what I have:

Not real happy with the hardscape at the moment, but interested in seeing what I can do with it. I need to add some smaller rocks...which I need to go get. I'll see about some different larger rocks while I'm there. I have some plants, and ordered some more tonight, but I have not really yet decided on what I am going to do...still pondering what I want to do.

Here's a quick video of the flow from the Topfin 30:

A bit low at the bottom, but I'll be swapping it out with a Hot Magnum 250 which needs a new impeller (ordered). So, then I'll see if that is a little too powerful...

Anyway, it's intended to be a low tech setup (Excel), so we'll see how that works out. I can always swap the bulb downward if I need to...

I've got Crypts, Anubias (nana & petite), Flame moss, Fissden, mini pellia, DHG, pennywart, and have ordered some M. minuta and DHG "Belem".

So, any thoughts, criticisms, suggestions are welcome. Especially concerning the hardscape or plants.

Added some plants. Right now the list looks like:

Anubias nana
Anubias nana petite
Crypt wendtii 'green'
Crypt wendtii 'Bronze'
Blyxa japonica
Pennywart

Coming:
DHG 'belem'
Marsilea minuta
Lobelia 'small form'

Picked up some small rocks, but have not added them yet. I picked up 2 large rocks that looked good on site, but I think I actually like the original rock best.

Still cloudy, but I'll fix that when the impeller for the Hot Magnum arrives...

Here's some pix of the 3 current choices. Personally, I like 1 and 2 the best, but open to thoughts...

I did add some more Anubias in the 3rd pic, so they will stay if I go with option 1 or 2...

1)

2)

Time to let it grow in for a while:

I may add some flame moss or fissidens, which I already have. I may end up covering the top rock with 1 of them, but I just cannot picture it as an improvement, so I'll see what happens down the road...

Current specs:

15g Tall- 13.5" x 13.5" x 19.5"H
20w spiral CFL w/ 5.5" dome
Metricide 14 = 6ml/day
Hot Magnum 250 with floss
Purigen
Black aquarium gravel
Black Diamond Blasting sand

Anubias nana
Anubias nana petite
Crypt wendtii 'green'
Crypt wendtii 'Bronze'
Blyxa japonica
Pennywart
DHG 'belem'
Marsilea minuta
Lobelia 'small form'

8 Tiger Barbs
10 Red Ramshorn snails
