Breed Diversity and reconsidering what to keep

Hello,

Just staring at my tanks and realizing that I actually have a lot of shrimp breeds, not considering individual quantities.

CRS s/ss/sss, CBS s/ss, snow white crystals, super tigers
Orange, yellow, fire reds, sakura, cherry, rili red/blue.

Debating whether its time to start focusing on quality over quantity...

Interested in seeing what types of shrimp other people keep these days...

I was just thinking the same thing and said it in a PM to someone on another forum. I have my CRS/CBS A/S/SS/SSS, golden/snow, tiger, yellow, fire/prf's. I am thinking of selling off my yellows and tigers and focusing just on crystals mostly and the PFR's. I already cut my sakura/fire/pfr population down and gave my roomie about 70 shrimp for his tank as none of them made the cut for me and I want my reds to be really nice reds. I have been using some of my tanks to just put 2 crs shrimp in to breed with as they are what I think are my nicest shrimp but if they have nice babies, I'm going to have to kick someone else out. lol. I have no more room for tanks at all, so my only choice is to either just breed a bunch of shrimp and let everyone be or cut down on a few breeds and focus more on breeding some really nice looking shrimps. I could buy them but I sort of like the challenge of being able to select some and let them do their thing and do my own culling and I think I have some decent stocks already to start with, so that is the direction I am thinking of going.

My list is much less numerous (and expensive) as both of yours.

Only sakuras, tigers, CBS (thanks to H4n), yellow/oranges, malawas, and babaulti blacks.

I like having a bit of variety but # of tanks and time, you have to decide what your focus is. I like keeping them and watching my tanks and enjoy the hobby. I do sell some of mine but I certainly don't expect to get rich doing it but it's nice to make a few extra bucks to pay for some of your costs. It comes down to is it easier to sell 10 yellows or fire reds or 1 Taiwan Bee. Same price, but is there market there locally for you to sell to? Do you want to get into shipping around and spending that extra time packing shrimp, covering DOA's, dealing with paypal disputes, etc.

I guess it depends on why you're keeping shrimp. If you're keeping them because you just enjoy having shrimp, then keep all you want. But if you're into breeding, cut down to two or three species and make the best you can. Me, I keep them because I enjoy them. I'd love to breed but my husband said no more tanks so no breeding for me.
