Best live plants for small tank

In a small tank with 1 betta, what is the ideal live plant to have in it? Something that won't grow past 10 inches and looks nice by itself- no moss or anything that needs to be tied down. A plant that looks similar to Java fern or Anubias, but can be planted straight into gravel and doesn't grow too big.

I plan to, if I can find an actual live marimo moss ball. Does anyone know how to keep an Anubias Bateri short and prevent the leaves from getting too big? I want it to say about 6" forever.

I've had pogostemon erectus growing like weeds in my 9g with moderate light and the occasional splash of flourish excel. It would probably grow taller than 10", but at that point you can just snip it an double your stems. It has really narrow leaves though, like needles, which probably isn't up your alley.

I'm not sure, should I get white gravel or white sand? Is gravel easier to clean because I don't have a vacuum.
