CRS Comparison

Though it might be interesting to people to try and compare some of the CRS I have in my possession right now (including some prl) as some of these will be going to another home come Monday. To be clear this is no way an absolute review of these shrimp nor their vendors (even though the source of some of these is obvious). I also don't want anyone to solely judge quality of shrimp based on these photos as both my camera and photography skills are lacking. Having said that lets get on with it. Except for the K14s where I only have one of them, each set has two different shrimp which I think are representative of overall quality. Photos were taken in quite bright light to try and highlight color coverage, but it washed out a bit the differences in intensity of whites and reds, which are larger in person than seen in these photos.

Lets start off with some typical SS grade shrimp as sold on this forum. I have had these the longest and have culled for color.

Next up is a K14. It should be noted that K14s have been bred for pattern and stable breeding, not necessarily color:

Now we have some KangShiang pure red line (prl) SSS grades:

And last is some A grade (color based) Ebiten prl shrimp:

Having observed these shrimp in person my thoughts are: Some of Kang's prl have the best whites and solid coverage, but some are disappointing and suffer from inconsistency. I didn't include photos of these as I think they are probably outliers and I will eventually cull them. Ebitens have the nicest red, very competitive whites, very solid coverage, and are consistent in quality. The K14 definitely is more of a yellow-white color to it, but actually has some pretty nice coverage on it and has an awesome crown pattern. The regular SS grades are actually surprisingly well colored. Don't get me wrong, they are a step down compared to the prl shrimp, but I was expecting a bigger difference when I started bringing in prl.

Again I want to emphasize please don't judge/make any buying decisions solely on these photos/my opinions.

A bonus shrimp photo of a Kang pink tinged CRS:

And my very feeble attempts to capture the eclipse from one of the best places in the nation to view it tonight. I lack a telephoto lens and no solar filter so had to make do with what I had:

IMO from the pics.

Kang for the white
Ebiten for the red legs (red legs are more rare than white legs)
K14 for the pattern

Overall everything combined...of the pictures shown...I like your EbiTen.

Even the first picture is a great looking CRS.

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

Pretty amazing what kangshiang has done when you consider the resources and time that have gone into the Asian shrimp breeders PRL shrimp in comparison to him doing it on his own.

Kang's shrimp offer some great bang for the buck, my Ebitens are very nice, but they were some serious money. I am hoping more American hobbyists start breeding to improve lines, it would do a huge service to improve the shrimp we have here in America while keeping prices reasonable.

That might be the only female CRS he showed. Not really sure haha. But yea.. it does look much thicker compared to the rest.

I purposely chose all males (or what I think are all males). Not sure how she slipped in there.

I think we only judge and comment on the pictures, not the actual shrimps. There is no other way other than see them in person to really "see" them fairly.

The 2nd Ebiten doesn't have "thick white" shell (on the lower portion) which is very important for a high grade shrimp, the 1st Ebiten though looks much nicer, but it can just be the picture.

Also @shrimpnmoss, any reference to the comment on red legs are better than white? My understanding is red+white (full coverage) > white > red > clear. In a tank of regular A/S grade CRS you can normally spot a few with some red coverage on legs but white is harder to find.

I did my best to normalize the photos but they still look different in person for sure. The biggest difference in my opinion is the camera did not do a great job in picking up the differences in intensity of the whites. Having said that I don't think any of the photos are massively unfair representations, I wouldn't of posted this if I thought that. My goal is to just provide additional data for those who enjoy CRS.

I will have to get some pictures of my stock as well. I have Crimson from Bob and "3rd Stringers" from KangShiang (Shawn). I am also planning to purchase a few other lines as well, and I'm going to mix them all. Mine are definitely not consistent. That said, they are all beautiful shrimp.

This picture is one of Bob's better Crimson followed by Shawn's PRL. The biggest difference? It's actually the size. Crimson are huge compared to KSPRL.

Hi Jorge-Burrito, I had no doubt that you had tried to use fair photos, and it's not about photography skills (good photography skills actually makes the difference even more). I was just saying it's impossible to compare shrimps in different pictures fairly, and seeing the shrimps in person is the only way to go. But you have done as best as can be and this is a good discussion, don't take me wrong.

In the end he's using the same measuring stick with difference type of shrimps.

Thank you for posting these. I aways wonder how much more the $300 shrimps are compare to the more affordable one.

Here's Beni (Left) vs KangShiang (Right) in the same picture. Beni is a few days after arrival. KangShiang was already in the tank for a week. One of a better SSS 3rd stringer, which I think he would classified this one as a 2nd stringer.

I'm so lost when it comes to all the CRS stuff. All I know is that they look like high grade shrimp and are very nice looking.
