it looks like cyanobacteria , just suck it out during water changes

Hi, I have the same algae as I post right above this thread. I have read that its because low nitrates = usually new/ uncylced tank.

So do I just dose Nitrogen for Nitrates??

IME it has nothing to do with low or high nitrates, it can occur in either case. best way to get rid of it to use a medicine which will effect negative and positive bacteria. once its gone it shall never return in that tank again.

blue green or cyano. is mostly related to the biological filtration of your tank
the absence of nitrates make it worse but are not the cure

good flow, decent oxygen levels, and a healthy bio filter will prevent cyano from ever happening

Flourish Excel or CO2 should kill it.

My nitrates are right about 20 ppm. Should they be higher?

Most lfs carry them as either Mardel's Maracyn (not Maracyn Plus or Maracyn 2) or API's E.M. Erythromycin.

Im actually having a similar problem but not as bad..

I might try maracyn.. not sure i want to try any other medicine.

To prevent it from comming back I think i'll add an airstone at night time to give the tank some better o2 levels.. then cut it off an hour before the Co2 kicks on....

Not to come off as an ass or anything but do you actually look up facts before just tossing advice out? Neither of those will kill it.

Look at the sticky heading up the algae section, I treated my tank and recorded the method, it takes 8 or 10 days but doesn't use much myacin and the fish, filter, etc. all stay in place.

Pull some out and smell it, if you want to puke it's Cyanobacteria!

BTW there is 200 mg in each pack of Mardel's Myacin.

+1 ^. It smells funky for sure. I always dose EM......I have had it appear with an established tank with a mature biofilter, nitrates at the time were 0ppm. I have had it in new tanks with high nitrates, I have had it come back after dosing before. It's a bear. Dosing for me has been the most effective way IME. Blackouts have worked for people before too, but when you totally blackout a tank, you run the risk of killing other plants in the tank as well. You also can't feed your fish while you do it.

Just because ur bio was mature doesnt mean it was healthy.
Keep in mind Poor flow and low oxygen contribute to unhealthy bacteria. This contributes to multiple forms of algae and it makes a tank that much harder to keep running smoothly.

I have more often seen it in low flow areas. Right now, for example, I have some at one end of a tank. The maximum water movement is at the other end of this tank, and the Cyanobacteria is in the low water movement end.
I have other tanks with similar low water movement, and no Cyano, so there is probably more to it than this.
