Snails in the plants

Well I've been looking at plants at some local stores and most of the store have snail in the tanks with the plants. When I ask what kind of snail they all have said "No Idea"

So how can you make sure you are not getting snails.
Is there a snailicide.

Some people use bleach, but what I do is put it in a plastic box with the water level raised high to the lid and full on blast it with co2 for 5 hours.

Im new so I just want to wrap my head around this

You take the new plant and put it a the equivalent to a barometric chamber and crank up the CO2.

Will that kill egg as well?

I ask because I had a snail and it ate everything but the algae so I would really like to stay snail free. Most of the stores that have any kind of good plant selection seem to be infested with snail.

Loaches eat snails and/or snail eggs I have a Zebra Loach.

I have over 50 assassin snails breeding in my RCS tank. So after cleaning the plant to remove what I'm able to remove, I put the plant in with the assassins. If I miss any eggs, it's not a big problem because I have more assassins in my other tanks.

Do the assassin snails eat algae to or just snails ,snail eggs and dead fish Or are the like shrimp in danger too.

Assassin snails will not eat algae, or enough of it to make a different. They will not attack live fish, unless the fish is really really retarded.

However, pest snails should not be eating healthy plants. At all.

Some apple snails will eat healthy plants and sometimes nerites have been reported to eat anachris.

Use alum (in the spice aisle at the grocery store). I use a couple of teaspoons to a half gallon of water, you can google 'alum dip for plants' to get exact amounts to be used. For snail eggs let plants sit for 3 days. I do a really good rinse after that and put in dechlorinated water. I do that for 3-4 days, the rinse and dechlorinate that is (I like to do about a week quarantine on plants I know have snails or critters).

For just snails, not eggs, you can sprinkle alum in there and watch them retreat and die within just a few minutes. I've done this with many different kinds of plants. If they are tough plants I just do a bleach dip but since what most I get in is moss and floaters for the shrimp, the alum is good but not as harmful to the plant. I DO recommend stirring your plants around every now and again while they sit in the alum dip. If it's floaters or something with dense roots the snails can hide and it won't get to them as well.

I'm going to come up with a plan all the plants i can get are infested with snail. I have a good selection of plants around but like I said snails.

I have concluded that I will have some kind snail in my tank but I want it to be the one I pick for the tank.


What is my chose of predators other then assassin snails. (Make, model, and some specs if you got then.) Thanks.

It's also helpful to dip and remove hair algae too. Sns is a virtual Petri dish of "extras" that aren't what you think.

Are you talking about alum? This helps remove hair algae?

Bleach is about the only thing that will kill algae, but if the plants are sensitive to it it will also kill the plant. Never seen much algae removal with alum or PP.
