Unknown fish ID with pic
Bought it from a Pet paradise on Wednesday. I brought it to my LPS and the owner and I struggled to ID it. He is keeping the fish in one of his planted tanks for now until we can identify it and see what we can do.
Doesn't look like anything I've ever seen.

I shall dub it the Large-Eyed Monocular Minnow.

I could try... But the fish is currently at my LPS, so I could ask him to get a better picture. He told me today when I went in that it was schooling with the guppies in the tank.

It's a tetra of some sort owing to the second, smaller dorsal fin (forgot how to spell it).

Looks like a commonly available type of tetra with a severe parasite issue..

What do you mean by a severe parasite issue?
Its silvery/transparent, orange and black tail and a huge eye with a red-ish sparkle. Also the fins on the sides are angled upwards like a hatchetfish. I'll see if I can get a better close-up picture. |

I could and probably am wrong. It just looks like a tetra that is really skinny, as if it has a parasite. If not, it's neat looking.

It's probably from the crappy camera and the bag making it look odd.

Right in front of the tail, on the back of the fish is a very small fin called an adipose fin. In the aquarium, Tetras are the main group that have this sort of fin. Not all Tetras have it.
I would start looking among the Tetras for it. |

ADIPOSE FIN!!! Thanks! Are there any other fish (other than the salmon/trout family) that have this fin?

I believe that is what's called a "Vampire Tetra" I had a few mature ones that look very similar. Good luck figuring it out. I'm sure you will eventually when it gets larger.

Yeah me and the owner were contemplating between the vampire tetra or possibly something else.
How large do vampire's get? Are they compatible? I just need more information on them. I just saw this on seriouslyfish. Tell me if I'm seeing things, but this looks rather similar. Full article: http://www.seriouslyfish.com/news.php?id=50 |

You sure its not one of these guys?
Vampire Tetra Because that picture of yours looks like a juvenile one to me. They pop up now and then at my LFS. It seems far more likely that you'd run into one of these than some newly described species.
