Thanks! It really turned out to be quite nice. Do people grow their trees in straight akadama? Because I want to do that next time...

I need some black lava rock now to mix with the akadama for the top layer.

trees look cool! and i like that kusa mona/wabi kusa you have!

i know some people grow some things in pure akadama. most i know of use a mix; akadama holds water pretty well. super fine laterite, super fine bark, and akadama is the mix that most i know of use

Has anyone come across a "Coral bark" Japanese maple in the smaller sizes? I have one in my back yard that I bought this spring but it was 5' tall. I think it would make a very interesting Bonsai due to the bark color.

Never seen one. Small Japanese maples seem quite hard to run into. Most are probably around 12"-18" or so. This reminds me, though, I really want to go to a local nursery and pick up a regular garden stock maple. They tend to be pretty expensive, though.

Unfortunately. I want a JBP too, but those are probably even more expensive.

i havent seen any decent mhugo's at garden centers. youd probably have to go to a bonsai nursery for that. i want a JWP

I know a place online with some decent mugos at good prices. Message me on FB if you want the link!

I wonder if my local nursery has any JBP. I doubt it, though. We already have ugly native pines. Maples, on the other hand, they will likely have. Gotta check...

Been wanting a bonsai for a while. I have a north facing window and it gets too cold where I'm at (college dorm)

So you bonsai experts, should I wait? Or is there a species that could survive that?

Or is there an affordable lighting option that I could substitute for an east/west window?
