Earlier this spring I took one of the nicer seiryu stones from a previous scape and planted an oak sapling around it out of boredom. The oak died soon after, but I took a maple seed from a neighbors tree and stuck it in the little bit of dirt that was around the rock (wrapped in cellophane).

To my surprise the maple sprouted and it now a good 8 inches tall. I'll give it a couple of years before removing the plastic wrap/ twine and washing away the tiny amount of dirt. Hopefully it will turn out okay considering I haven't been able to arrange the roots around the rock in any way haha.

Yes, some brown thumbs are in every bonsai club, that is for sure.
But hopefully they learn and get better.


I have a nice patch of HC coming along nice in my Olive tree.
My atlas cedars are coming along nicely and will show nice in another 1 to 2 years.

Still have not gone up to the mountains for pines and cedars, but it'll be time soon. Hopefully in Nov and Oct I'll be able to collect and repot then when it's cool and rainy here.

I do not like getting them when it's 90-110F here.

Time to shine some light on this thread. This, if I'm not mistaken, is what's known as the home stretch in bonsai defoliation!













Photos were only taken indoors due to poor lighting outside (rainy day). The tree sits on the porch where it gets good sunlight but partial shade.

looks great kiran!

last weekend i made it out to the garden center in search of some discount bonsai stock. i definitely found what i was looking for! i came home with two trees. one is a japanaese holly (Ilex crenata 'green lustre') that has twin trunk with really cool developed nebari. the trunks are nice and thick and the branch structure is pretty good. its in a 3 gallon pot and i talked them down to $14.99!

the second tree i got is a Parson's Juniper Juniperus squamata expansa 'Parsonii'. its small, in a 1 gallon pot but has a pretty thick trunk with good and interesting movement and the branch structure is decent. definitely a good price at $6.99!

for both of them i plan on taking it very slow and enjoying the whole process. it will be a long process for both (especially the juniper) but i think the outcome will be very nice!

i did some sketches of possible stylings. they are all done in charcoal. sorry they arent too detailed...

How come my Bonsai tree looks like this? Some of the leafs are twisted and are of a light green colour.

Can you give us a side shot? What species is it?

Looks like a ficus. Twisted leaves would probably be a nutrient deficiency I would guess.

Typical ficus bonsai tree. My dad got it from Costco and gave me it. I then turned the bonsai into this :

i dont think the leaves are twisted from a deficiancy. i think its just from how it was growing in relation to a light source. nothing to worry about

Howdy, y'all! I got me here some of that fancy akerdamer dirt as a top layer dressing and though I'd log on to these here internets and share some photos of it with y'all.

Lol, I got some shots of all the trees before, after, and after watered with water. I like this aspect of akadama, it seems it will offer a nice perk seeing as it'll be an ugly light color when it needs to be watered.
