Also, does anyone here use crushed lava rock as a top layer dressing? Any other suggestions for a top layer? Because mine look ugly.

I have always had an interest in Bonsai trees. Are there common plants found at garden centers? I have never been able to figure out what made a tree a "Bonsai" tree.

Junipers and maples are the first to come to my mind.

Training, wiring, shaping, and leaf reduction make trees into bonsai. As well as root pruning and foliage pruning.

Where is the love for this thread?

Here's a picture taken on a rainy day of a leaf from Trident Maple I found in a park downtown compared to my Trident Maple bonsai's leaf. The wonders of leaf reduction:

I've never had a bonsai but after reading through this whole thread I want one. It fascinates me that the leaves grow smaller than the same tree that's not a bonsai. What does it mean when you guys say leaf reduction?

I've been reading about bonsais for over an hour lol

There was a truck set up in a parking lot selling bonsai trees a few weeks ago. I sure do wish I would have stopped to look.

The pictures in this thread are awesome!

I've been on the bonsai 4 me site. (something like that) Is that a good site for someone clueless like?

There's a bonsai on you-know-where that's priced at $65,000.

I really want a pine or juniper... I'm going to Chicago soon and maybe I'll be able to find a good place along the way.

Here's my small collection (if you can even call it that lol) at the moment. Pics taken just 20 min ago or so.

Chinese elm and Trident maple

Chinese elm, about 1.5 weeks after a good pruning.

Trident maple, going on I think 3 weeks after repotting.

Who's got trees that hasn't posted pics yet? Who's got updates on trees they've had!

Here's my Sawara Cypress. I just shaped it from a blob today. Very impressed with the tapering of the trunk. I want some advice on it though, what should I do differently to it?

Edit: I suck at wiring lol so that's why it looks so messy. :P
