Sea shells for whatever aquarium purpose!

Hey all, my family is going to vacation on Anna Maria Island. It is off the gulf coast of Florida. Anywho, I was reading about the place and apparently, they have a good variety of sea shells. Can I gather a whole lot of them and put them in a cichlid tank? From what I hear, the shells help the alkalinity and hardness of the water, but I could be wrong.

My wife's sister lives in Anna Maria island and we visit once a year .... The first thing I do is go looking for driftwood & shells . I use them in my multi's tank . I soak them in hydrogen peroxide over night then give them a good rinse. I think you would need to put a lot of shells in your tank to see a noticeable difference . I have maybe 30 shells in a 20 long and it's the same params that come out my tap.

Hmmm...where is the best place to find driftwood there? I'd love to come home with some aquarium stuff!

I usually find pieces where the river meets the ocean. But anywhere I have been I find pieces. Also if they have had storms in tge last few days you will find some mangrove roots that are washed up , keep those and maybe use them in a future project .
