I think it's way too much light if you're going to be running it directly over the top of the tank. How many hours photoperiod were you looking at? 10-12?

it's about 4-5 inches off the water surface b/c of the legs it has. I was running 7.5hrs, but today i dropped it to 6.5hrs because i noticed some algae growth as of the last week or two.
It can run on 1 bulb, so I am torn if 1 bulb would suffice. |

You probably have high light or perhaps high medium light, but in any case, you need good CO2 to avoid all kinds of algae problems. DIY CO2 will probably not be good enough. Once black brush algae gets established recovering from it is very hard to do. Raise the light to about 10-12 inches above the top of the tank and you should be OK.

getting it 10-12 inches above the tank isn't possible right now, so I am running it with 1 t5ho bulb, that should be just about medium light.
