water change using water straight from tap?

When using a hose connected to a hot and cold valve with water that comes out quickly how in the world do you get the temperature anywhere near the same temp as the tank? I have always used a bucket and heated and treated the water in there before putting it directly in the tank. Is it even safe to do it straight out of tap? Would putting it in a bucket and testing the temp of the water as it comes out and adjusting as it goes work? And then pump it into the tank with a submersible pump be a better option? Just not sure what the best option would be. thanks!

I fill straight from the tap, and don't do a perfect job matching the temperature. I just do the best I can and don't worry about it too much. With fairly small water changes (<25%), I might just do cold water and not worry about it. I don't keep any sensitive species, though.

I fill from the tap but first run it for a short while til the temp stabilizes and guess briefly by touch then add it to the tank

Or I just add cool water to the tank over the heater to make the heater come on

I think your thinking a bit to much here . Using your hand get it close as you can. Doesn't need to be perfect. When I do it I drain 50 percent, add dechlor for entire tank volume with filter off, let it sit 10 minutes so the dechlor can do its thing, test new water coming out of python with hand and fill it up.

Ok so you think if I feel it with my hand and get it close enough it will be okay? It is going to be a 40% water change....

As long as the water isn't ice cold or boiling, you're not going to have a problem.

Your hand is sensitive enough for water changes. I run some water out of the tap and adjust the temp, then go for it. My tap water has too much air dissolved in it when the weather is cold, so I do not do direct fills then. But during the summer I will, and sometimes I fill as I am emptying, and add dechlor as I go. I know how many gallons per minute I am running, so I just keep ahead of that much with the dechlor.

Large tanks> I usually just drain about 25%, add Prime and refill straight from the cold water tap with a hose. Just make sure to flush the tap for a minute or so to clear any bad water out.

Small tanks (My small tanks usually have shrimp and small fish that don't like flucuations)> I fill buckets, add Prime, stack them to the side and let them sit a day or 2. Gives them time to warm to the room temp and nutralize a little more.

I don't think there is chlorine in the public water here, but I will use water conditioner anyway.

Very similar to what I do. My tank is on the smaller side (20g) so I just use a 5g mop bucket and fill it from the sink then use a Maxi-Jet 1200 to pump it into the tank lol

I found I can pump straight from the bathroom sink to the using the pump in the sink and filling the sink some but I don't feel the bathroom sink water is very clean or safe (with toothpaste, for example) so have been using a mop bucket and pump water from it to the tank. I do 50% a week and it takes about 10 minutes or so this way

btw Diana I always like your posts - you've given me a lot of ideas and made me think of easier ways to do a lot of things with my tank
