dual tank startup: 35gallon long and 2.5gallon nano

so im fairly new to planted tanks. i tried growing plants a long, long time ago and had light success. however, i was bitten by the salt bug and have been doing saltwater tanks over the last decade.

i recently purchased a 35 long with old, beat up stand for 10$. seals were in-tact, though there was a ton of calcium build-up. soaked it in vinegar for 2 days, drained it, cleaned it, washed it with dish soap, rised it and finally, it is fit for duty.

i had it running (briefly) with some yellow labs(6, now in a QT tank til im finished with this one), black gravel. looked plain so thats when i decided to make it planted.

have the soil down now. am using miracle grow organic soil mix (no cow poop, just chicken poop). the layer is about 2 inches thick (what i was going for) and i used 1 and a half bags of the 18 quart bag.

currently, am draining most of the water (had it running for 24 hours with all 3 filters going to get out the finer stuff) and have already fished out the big pieces that floated.

i took a video of the tank before i tore it down and will post that in a few. must return to washing the sand, emptying the tank and preparing for more cloudiness

the 35 gallon now has dirt and sand in it. i ended up with about a 2" dirt bed being held down by a 3" sand bed. im contemplating removing about an inch or so of sand tomorrow morning, once everything is super clear.

right now, the tank is about 70% clear. its still got some haze to it, but the plants i added, in addition to running 3 filters (peguin 200, aquatech 5-15 and aquatech 30-60).

flow is a bit much, will probably scale down to the penguin 200 eventually and suppliment that with a maxijet or other powerhead.

gotta drop off some stuff at work, then coming home to play with the tank ALL DAY! gonna pick up some 2" rubber hosing to use as a syphon and get about an inch of sand out of there, as well as the dirt that somehow made its way to the surface...

*scratches head* thought i got all the floaters....

anywho, my introduction to my tank, as well as a video of it running before i switched to dirt will be coming today! water is almost clear. in a day or 2, it should be crystal clear.

all 3 filters are still going strong!

might do some aquascaping as well, not entirely satisfied with plant positioning right now.

Quickly, put a background on that thing! The cars rushing left and right behind the tank are terribly distracting.

i had the curtains drawn to let in more light while i took the video. usually i keep them closed. theyre black, so it brings out the yellow labs colour more and makes it easier to see:X

am taking a video in a few, just cleaning up before i do. tanks got plants, just not sure if im going to keep them arranged the way they are.

alright. things were hectic the last month and this month, but have calmed down. ive managed to snap some photos and picked the best ones to crop, resize and post. aside from that, the photos have not been altered.

enjoy!
