Laura's 55 Gallon High Tech Dirt Tank

Well folks, I guess its time to start a new journal since I managed to get my hands on a 55 gallon tank. It really needs some work. I'm waiting on a new rim to replace the broken one, so that is the first thing on the list. My LFS happened to have a couple on order already, so I'm just waiting on that to come in. It apparently takes 2-3 weeks for anywhere around here to get them.

I went to a fish auction put on by the Tri-County Tropical Fish Society yesterday and managed to pick up a nice piece of driftwood for $4! I think it will look awesome with some peacock moss and java ferns attached to it. Its about 3 feet long. Its outside soaking already (in a covered container of course )

The plan for this tank is to have a mineralized soil substrate with the existing Black Diamond sand from my 38 gallon tank. All of the plants from my existing 38 and 10 gallon will be moved to this tank.

Anyways, I am told I have to go for now, but more to come soon!

Just to add to my previous post, I am planning on using the existing equipment that I have on my 38g which is the filter and media, co2 system, substrate, etc, to preserve the biological ecosystem that I have already built up. The only new things in this tank will be the tank itself, adding dirt under the black diamond, and the driftwood.

As far as fauna, I have 3 super veil koi angels, and a few corys that will be going in there. I've got a couple of stray guppy babies that I missed before, which will be donated to my aquarium club for a fish raffle, and I've also got a small colony of RCS. I'm not sure if they will be going in with the angels right now. They havent messed with them at all yet, but I'm very weary about putting them in with the angels. I also have a pair of breeding Dwarf Gouramis that I'm not real sure what I'm going to do with, and a baby male from their first spawn that will probably be donated for the raffle as well when he grows up and starts getting a little color.

Thanks! I got one visible pic of them tonight. I really wish I could have gotten a side shot of the one with the most coverage but I apparently need a dslr to get good shots of them.

Soaked my soil for 24 hours. Got it sitting out drying on the back porch now. Let me tell you how excited my boyfriend is about that. My biggest trial so far is keeping the dog and neighbor kids out of it... I'm curious how to tell if my soil has enough clay in it....

Oh no, its me. I have a light case of OCD.... when I find something I'm into, I go all out. Him not letting me have that room limits my ability to set up more tanks lmao

The 55 is on the mend. Rather than trying to completely re-rim the thing, I simply replaced the center brace with a piece of acrylic. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be once I got the dremel in my hands. Although I do have a war wound on my face from flying plastic. Tomorrow, I'll do a test fill outside to see how well it is going to hold.

It will be really nice not to have a shadow of the center brace in the center of the tank
