substrate for shrimp


what do you people use?
trying to start a 10g just shrimp tank and was wondering what substrate is best.

I really don't think it matters. I know some people like Fluval Shrimp Stratum.

The new "in" thing is akadama. Its inert, has high cec, and no ammonia like other substrates do. It will help lower ph also so depending on spcies, could be very beneficial. Nilocg sells some.

I think it depends on the shrimp you want to keep. If you want neos, use sand/blasting media. Cheap and easy to find and they do just fine with it. If you want harder to keep shrimp, then you'll want to look into the more shrimp specific substrates that offer certain buffering capabilities. I am using Black Diamond blasting media in my yellow neo tank, Petco brand black sand in my mixed neo tank, and Akadama in my OEBT tank.

my fluval shrimp tank has their substrate..

but i have two 50lb bags of BLACK DIAMOND from Tractor Supply.. 20/40 grit..

thats going into my shrimp tank rack of 20g longs

I want to start with Cherry and wake my wake up to harder one.
i got one bag of eco mix with soil i just took out of a tank and ton of pool sand and black diamond.

i have every thing from natural pea gravel to fluval shrimp stratum. my orange eye blue tigers on on miracle grow organic with black and pool filter sand mix, rili on pea gravel, and crystal reds and red tiger (not in same tank) have fluval shrimp stratum

I use Oliver Knott Naturesil with mine, in RCS and CRS tanks. One planted, one not.
