Is there any "correct" place to put it?

A drop checker? Most people would recommend you place it furthest away from where your CO2 source is.

You can also place it at various points around your aquarium to get an idea of the CO2 gradient throughout your aquarium (if you have a large aquarium).

I agree with Darkblade, furthest point away from your diffuser, or outflow if you are injecting inline or into a sump. My largest tank has been a 29 gallon so I have never seen a noticeable difference in CO2 levels in different parts of the tank but many will move it around to check for differences in levels throughout the tank.
