This is a terrestrial plant that we can't identify. Does anyone know what it is?

Looks like a Taro or a relative.

Thanks Rumples, I think that's exactly what it is. I think ours is a Chinese Ornamental Taro. The Aussies have a problem with it, as it's used in some Asian cooking.
http://aquat1.ifas.ufl.edu/colesc.pdf Interestingly, many sites list it as a pond border plant in some instances, and even a submerged plant in others. It almost looks similar to Anubias - a distant relative perhaps. |

I grow 2 kinds of Taro, Black Taro, and Green Taro. Both will survive a wide variety of conditions, as long as temps stay over 50. The Black (really a very deep purple) lives as a marginal in my pond through the summer, goes inside for the winter. The green is used as a potted plant, outside summer, inside winter. Either will accept direct sunlight, or deep shade, or anything in between. Just keep their feet wet and they're happy. they do attract Aphids. I have never tried them submerged, but a hunch would say they'd survive a while, then croak.

Apparently it has ordinary roots instead of a corm, which is necessary for it to be a Taro. So we're back to square one

Not necessarily the case, my Taro has a small corm and then a mass of roots. The corm is not very large so it is hard to see.
