just out of curiosity, why aquasoil? doesn't that stuff leech serious amounts of ammonia while the tank is cycling?

Yeah - I heard the same. I read about the other options and Aquasoil seemed to be the best long-term buffer (hope to get a year out of it). AND...of the buffering substrates, its best for growing plants. At least thats my take on it from what I read.

I'd like to dry start a tank with Aquasoil and DHG....but i'm wondering if I wait a month for it to grow in and then flood it... will it still leech ammonia for another month??

I'm no expert, but I would imagine it would leech off the ammonia during the dry start, since is really an emersed start.

I heard ADA Amazonia is the best soil for CRS tank or planted tank from all around world
so i tried as well , 27L ada soil is enough for 40gal breeder

1~30days , i cycled water with one sponge filter and aquaclear 70 fully loaded with ammonia remover. I Check ammonia lv every week, its over 2.0
after 30days, i added new fluval 405 filter as well. so 3 filters
however ammonia lv was over 1.0 for up to 58days
yes u really have to wait for 2 months to use ada soils

This is my 40gal ADA soil CRS tank BTW
about 15 pee wee CRS hiding all the time

Thats seems very long. Were you using cycled media in any of the filters?

What substrate do you use for your other shrimp btw?

all cycled media, 2 times a week 50%, 70% waterchange with fully cycled water from my 110 and 40gal tanks, but it really took me 2months
after 30 , 45 days , i really got mad lol

BTW i have this 27L ada soil CRS tank
30L akadama soil from nicole, just enough for 55gal which will be OEBT tank
8 of 15 or 20gal tanks - one bag of 8.8 Fluval shrimp subs each
when i breed lots of shrimps , anybody is welcome to my house
maybe a year later....

Hey Jimmy,

What type of plants are you trying? What type of light?

Start off with simple plants, you got to find your good balance of light, co2 and ferts.

With my tank, I was dosing K2SO4, CSM+B, KH2PO4, Iron Chelate, and KNO3 three times a week. I have since stop dosing Iron Chelate, and I am only dosing twice a week. I find my plants growing the same, if not better.

You grow Java Ferns, and Anubias well so build off of that. Try Crypts, they are low light, and will grow well even without co2 and ferts.

Look at this list, this are all easy plants to grow:

I believe failure is just a step to success, and with a little work you should be able to keep a well planted tank.

Hey Bill,

I trimmed the Pogostemon stellatus a couple weeks ago. It seems I have about 8 stems growing on the parts I trimmed. At some point, I have to remove those stems from the original stem and replant correct?

And why do people say it's such a hard plant to grow? It's seems to be grow well for me in Med Light.
