Slate is very affordable! I was surprised at how cheap it was to pick up 150 pounds of the stuff.... It cost me about $35.

I should have updated this last week... THe day after the last picture was take my tank suffered a tremendous disaster. I lost my 4 large bala's, 3 large SAE's, a clown loach, and 3 ornamental shrimp. In total I lost about $150 in livestock.

I was able to pin down the tank crash and have resolved the issue. It has been a very sad week.

Since then, I have restocked the lost fish. I have decided to stick with only 3 bala's instead of 5 (the big ones had been bullying the other fish), I added 3 more gourami's, a yoyo loach, and a sun loach. The new tank dynamic is wonderful and it has really settled in.

I re-arranged the plants after the tank went nuts to make it look a bit more natural and wild. I was finding the plants looked too "layered" and really didnt look right.

As you can clearly see, I have also moved my pleco into this tank. This was probably the smartest thing I could have done for it. The pleco has cleaned every anubias plant in the whole tank. They are spotless now!

Sorry to hear about your loss. What happened? CO2 get out of control? Happened to me. Thank god I caught it before the fish died. I got lucky!

I dont have CO2 on this tank yet. It was a bacterial bloom of a substancial size that caused the damage.

CO will probably be all set up in January, I wont have all the pieces before then.

Bala sharks are awesome. It is hard to imagine how large some of those plants (on the left) must be when you consider the tank is a 135! What do you have for lighting? If you haven't bought it yet, I would definitely overdrive something, it would be a lot cheaper, but I myself have PC's, and they are nice to have. It is too bad to hear your loss. Once you get CO2, all those plants will be growing like crazy!

I only have 4 x 40 watt Flourescent Tubes over the tank. They are Hagen Power GLo bulbs which they say are 18000k, although I think they are closer to 10000k

I hate how the bulbs that the fixture comes with are the wrong color! Both my fixtures (NOF and PC) came with bulbs at or above 9325 K! It was way to bluish for me.

I actually quite like the bluish light. It brings out the colour of the slate more. 6400k bulbs tend to make the tank look too green (or that could just be what the colour mixture looks like)

Yes, everyone likes different lights. My brother was begging me to keep the blue lights, while my mom was going to make me get rid of them if I didn't. The blue lights made my (brown-red) driftwood look purple! That I did not like!
