I have a hair algae meadow. I made the mistake of adding one dose of fertilizer when I first planted the tank. Wherever the Akadama dust landed, hair algae grew! lol I actually like it on the driftwood, but of course it spreads to the plants and substrate. yuk

How often do they need to eat something other than algae?

If there's not enough algae for Amano shrimp, they need to be fed like any other dwarf shrimp.

I have a tank of about 30 that I feed every day with veggie sticks, spinach, Repashy or regular shrimp foods.

Well I've never kept shrimp before, but I have read here that many people only feed their shrimp a couple times a week. I definitely would not feed them every day at this point.

If you are supplementing some sort of algae for other herbivores or algae eating fish then the Amanos can 'share' with that.

A lot of people already have Otos or cories or something similar that they feed algae wafers to anyways.

If all that you have in the tank are tetras and you only feed flake food then you would probably want to drop in a partial algae wafer twice a week or something similar.

That is how I treat them atleast and they seem to do fine.

The only inhabitants now are 10 Amanos and 4 Nerites. I did give them 2 BW Grow squares. I was curious to see how they act. lol Well it was a brawl. haha So funny to watch them stealing from each other and trying to swim away with the wafer that weighs as much as they do. I don't think they will finish them though, so I'll remove them in a bit. It's been a couple hours and it doesn't seem that they've put a dent in the squares even though they are constantly picking at them.

It did show me that they are content munching on the algae though because after the "what's that?" moment each went back to the algae except for a couple who really love those squares. lol

I asked her that as well. She is having problems with them. She said 1 to 2 are dying a day, but she is treating them. She will put them back up, when she stops having problems with them.
