Gas and lots of it

I recently set up my tank with an inch and a half of Miracle Gro topped with Ecco complete. Ammonia shot up without me adding any, but what followed was a fairly normal if fast cycle (I used established filter materials); it took 2-3 weeks for everything going back to zero.

The tank is cycled now and has plants and fish. But there is a lot going on in the dirt. Lots and lots of gas bubble, and when I poke the substrate, a lot comes up. The smell is somewhat foul but relatively faint. The tank itself smells fine.

Is this all normal?

Help us out here, what's the smell you're keying in on? Is it like a humus dirt smell, or ammonia, or hydrogen sulfide, or . . .

There is definitely a sulfuric component, not ammonia. It's also not very strong. Nowhere near a fresh bottle bottle of Prime e.g.

I'd vent it with a chopstick when you do water changes. Other than that I would not worry about it.

In all seriousness, mine did that like crazy for the first month...maybe more. I poked at it some for a few days, but then I just gave up and let it pass.

(no pun intended)
