Not sure if adding the cat will really help your tank

Long story...I changed the substrate and then had lighting issues...killed most of my plants...got new plants, more lighting issues...killed plants. New light with 8 80 watt T5s should do the trick.

And the angels like it a lot!

Hey that's nothing. I could see about an inch into the tank first time I had GW. That time and only that time dosing nitrate got rid of it.

Plants do fine with GW and fish like it too, it is baby fish food after all. All the other algae vanished during the bout, not that there was much at that point, that was before BBA started up and there was mostly GSA in there.

No matter how heavily planted the tank was I kept getting GW, now that I have pretty good biological filtration it hasn't come back. I wonder if filter bacteria can scavenge ammonia faster than GW organisms and faster than plants?

Good luck - hope the plants do the trick. 8x80 ought be more than enough light, hope your CO2 is up for the challenge!

Added 10 pygmy chain swords, 7 crypt lutea. I also pulled out several unknown crypts. I was going to hook up a better CO2 diffuser and silicone tubing, but I broke one of the diffusers, cutting my finger pretty good. I also did an 80% water change... still greenish.

Had GW like that once, 3 x 50% change over 3 days and it never came back.

Invest in a HOB "marineland" filter and diatomaceous earth from vortex. Put about a cup of DE in the filter and let it run for a few hours to get rid of that GW. I just leave the HOB working all the time and change the medium once a month-5 weeks.

I would just do like the above poster said about the water changes. Keep doing 50 percent changes a few times a day daily and also get the lighting and co2 and ferts balanced!

Diatomaceous Earth

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceous_earth

The stuff clings to the micron filter in the HOB from Marineland, and will remove anything down to 1 micron(1 millionth of an inch) in size. This includes such things as Ich, Green Water, and so on.

It permanently polishes your aquarium water so the tank always looks perfectly clear.

If you do use this, you'll want to let the filter run in a container(I use one of the Tupperware type about 8" tall 4x6 wide) for a minute making sure that the DE is all sucked up before releasing the filter onto the tank(pull the Tupperware container out from underneath so the filter keeps running without shutting it off) or else you'll have DE all over the tank.
