Play Sand in Shrimp Tank?

I would like to set up a new tank just for rcs/crs and I was wondering if it would be okay to use play sand in the tank? I am using flourite currently, but the only bag I could find locally was red colored, so the shrimp really don't stand out.

I am still pretty new to shrimp keeping so any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You can, but they will really stand out against a dark substrate. I use black diamond blasting grit in my shrimp tank, they look wonderful against it.

I do have a few bags of plain Petco black sand... would that work?

That would but two things to keep in mind.

1) what are your water parameters? CRS are picky and people often need active substrates to buffer the pH to a level the CRS like. RCS should be fine though.

2) aeration. Get some MTS to avoid dead spots, or just poke around with a stick every week

& I do have some MTS that I could throw in there if needed.

Have you kept CRS before? Have the bred for you using flourite?
