bulb questions

Hey everyone,
I'm new on here but not to tanks or lighting (I run a reef tank). Anyway, I had an extra tank and decided to start a planted FW tank. I have a 20h as my tank. A local guy had a current t5 2 bulb fixture that is 20" long. It is a bit short but for now I believe it will work. I'm getting 1.8 watts per gallon. My question is since I don't know too much about plant bulbs, is it ok to run 2 12,000k bulbs or should put in a 10,000K since I have one. Or should I go with different bulbs. I would like to upgrade to a fixture that actually fits the tank but money is tight being a college student. Thanks!

From everything i've read it's better to go with a 5000-7000k bulb. The higher ones are used for reef tanks.I use 6500k myself and never tried the higher k bulbs.I'm by no means an expert on the issue, but if i had extra money i would purchase different bulbs to avoid any algae issues and such..If i didn't have extra money go with the bulb closest to that 5000 to 7000k range.

On a college budget, try what you have and see how it goes.
The worst thing that can happen is an algae bloom (explosion) that requires tearing down and redoing the tank. Since you have more time than money at this point in your life, that won't cost much. If you do end up purchasing bulbs, then yes, you'd want to be in the 6000K range.
