Drew & Laura's Rimless 33G Mr Aqua. Manzanita out, Rocks in. New Scape!
(Photo Intensive!)
Best Christmas present ever, my gf bought me a 33 Gallon Mr Aqua. Just upgraded from a 10 gallon, my first rimless tank! It's become a great project for my gf and I. We're trying to go for a somewhat minimalist aesthetic with the scape. Focusing on the manzanita, open sand and vibrant anubias green. The 10 G was mostly a collectoritis type setup, excited to move in a new direction. The Particulars: - Eheim 2217 (currently in the mail pending delivery) - Catalina 2x24 Watt Solar T5 in the 4 bulb casing with moonlights ( arriving soon) - GLA Cabinet - Flora: Will mostly consist of Anubias varieties, Blyxa, Dhg, maybe a crypt or two. - Fauna: School of Cardinals, 2 discus, Gold Angel. - Rootmedic ferts - Manzanita from PC1 - Sand Substrate - C02 Tbd Looking forward to comments and suggestions for the project! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() More Uploading. Still planting up around the rocks and possibly adding a rock or two. Planning on raising the manzanita to sit on top of the rocks.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Undersized C02, HOB aqueon, and clunky lamp all moving out. Also building up another layer of rock with 2 to 3 more rocks as a base to raise the wood up even higher. Waiting for manzanita to become completely water logged so it doesn't need to be pinned down. Also, moving mostly towards anubias varieties and building them up more heavily around the base. Possibly getting more wood.. I really like this piece but wish it was slightly larger. |

I like that driftwood in that tank, the scale is good. I'd offer that less is better in hardscape. In my eyes simple always looks best. I think you are off to a good start.

Any suggestions on improving this scape? I was thinking possibly making it all anubias around the base of the rocks. Maybe some narrow leaf java fern attached near the bottom of the manzanita. And possibly some sort of 10 inch background plant. I wouldn't want it to grow to tall, I like being able to see the back of the tank.. Anyways here it is after adding some more rocks and anubias. Any suggestions very welcome!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thinking of adding a little more wood.. Any other plants anyone thinks might fit into this not already mentioned? I'm worried it's a bit too symmetrical.. I did want it centered, but I think I need to mess it up a little more with plants and possibly more wood to "naturalize" it. Thanks for any thoughts! (HOB leaving this week hopefully, Floor lamp leaving in about 1 or 2 pay periods for a Catalina T5, Replacing undersized C02 a little further down the road) |

Have you considered adding some moss to the wood as well? Sort of like a tree effect. That's what I see when I look at the scape. I like the fern idea as well as well as some stem plants in the background. If you add more wood, you would have to make it look similar to what you already have or else it may cause some tension in the tank. Try to work with what you got and I think it will work out. This is coming along nicely , can't wait to see it grow out!
