Can these bottles explode?

I'm using an Ocean Spray bottle for my DIY C02 thing with a ceramic diffuser. It was debatable as to whether I'd get enough pressure to force the air through the diffuser, but it's been going solidly for a week now.

I had the bottle turned such that I didn't notice this before, but that thing is swollen on the sides to the point where it looks like it's just going to explode. It's shaped like a football!

I guess since the air is escaping, it's not a threat, but has anyone ever had a plastic bottle like this just explode on them? I'm hoping something else would give first, like the tubing connected to the diffuser. It makes me nervous everytime I walk by it now, haha. I might just keep a towel over it... not that it would do much good.

My first thought would be if you have your mixture right?

Yes, the cap will blow off if the pressure is too much.

Isn't that a lot of liquid?

What kind of bottle is that?

There is a reason most of us use soda bottles, aside from being readily available they are usually a little thicker and prepared to withstand a bit of internal pressure...since they are filled with it normally.

I doubt it would "explode", but yea...the cap might come off and make a heck of a mess.

I've blown up a soda bottle with a yeast reaction.
But it was sealed.
I'd made some elderflower champagne. It's a similar mix.
The bang brought the neighbours out...

Moral: make sure your co2 can go somewhere that isn't in the bottle!

PS. the bottle looked way more tense than that.
And I'd at least had the sense to take it outside.

Buffheman:

So what kind of yeast and how much of it did u use?

1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon is about the surface area of one or two thumbnails.

Hi buffheman,

Would you call this an explosion?

Yes, it can explode. How it explodes it pretty much anyone's guess. The top may blow off. The bottle, itself, may explode. The CO2 line may explode somewhere. You'll have from just a messy situation to deal with all the way up to a broken tank.

With this type of setup, you should probably use an in-tank reactor with no possibility of pressure buildup (nothing blocking the bubbles entering the tank).

Can it explode? Yes. But, as others and yourself mentioned, it's more likely to "give" in the tubing, bottle cap, check valve, bubble counter, diffuser etc. Those bottles have fairly thick plastic but because cran juice isn't carbonated, one wouldn't want to assume it's designed/made to hold high pressures like a soda bottle would be. Ever seen what happens when u hurl a full 2l on the ground?

Are you running a bubble counter somewhere?

+1 for galabars comment on the in tank reactor, a small powerhead works wonders for that, and no build up pressure.

No the bottom itself will not, there not enough psi.
Yes the cap will explode.
Yes the hose will snap off.

Do yourself a favor and lower the mix, pour some out.

that looks like a gatoraide bottle, and if im not mistaken have a much thicker plastic wall vs a standard 2 ltr.

But yes that can explode. i would bet it would explode more so at the cap then the bottle itself unless the bottle already had some form of structural fail on it.
