35G Malaysian Pond Hex - Updated Pics (3/30/2012)

Plans: This is going to be loosely based on a Malaysian pond biotope. Obviously, my fancy-pants betta would not be found in the wild, but that doesn't mean he does not deserve a groovy tank, right?

Current Pic - Filled, planted & partially stocked

Current Stats
Tank: 30 Gallon Hexagon (18" flat to flat; 25" high) 35 Gallon Hexagon (23 1/4" flat to flat; 24 3/4" high)
Stand: "Vintage" 1970s Hexagon End Table (Goodwill find @ $15!)

Filter: Hagen Fluval 205
Light: Current USA Nova Extreme T5HO 2X18 Watt Coralife Aqualight 2X20W 20 inch T5HO
Heater: 200W Hydor Inline

Substrate: Eco-Complete Red

Hardscape/Decor: A few river rocks

Flora
Nymphaea lotus 'Zenkeri' (Red Tiger Lotus)
Limnophila sessiliflora (Asian Ambulia)
Cryptocoryne parva
possible a few other crypts

Fauna
1 Male Gold/Yellow Halfmoon Dragon Betta (Apollo, in my profile pic)
1 Opaline Gourami
Rasbora heteromorpha (Harlequin Rasbora) (Currently 5; planning 11)
Pangio kuhlii (Kuhlii loach) (Currently 0; planning 6)

Getting Started
The tank was a classifieds find for about $10. The silicone was in pretty bad shape and stained from some kind of medication, so the tank needed a reseal.

My son helped me scrape out the old silicone cause my arms are too short to reach the bottom of the tank easily.

Hoping to get to the re-seal today. Wish me luck!

Almost ready for Resealing

Well good luck with the seal. I can't wait to see what the eco red looks like I have the black but never seen the red. Also haven't seen to many hex tanks either.

Good luck with the reseal. Interested to see what your Bettas look like.

OK...so the reseal did not go well. I am not good at this...at all. My husband looked at it and actually suggested that I might just buy another tank. I'm going to sleep on it and decide tomorrow whether to pull out the silicone and try it again.

So doesn't that reseal job look great! LOL!

It was horrible! I have put it away for now and purchased a new 35 gallon hex for my room.

Here are a few pics. Here is just set up with the substrate.

A bit cloudy after planting and filling.

And a current pic with a few inhabitants. Five harlequins and my opaline gourami.

I had my gold betta, Apollo, in there for a while, but he really seemed miserable. I don't think he liked the big tank. So I moved him back to a 10 gallon until I can get him a new home.

My gourami seems much happier in there. He was in my 55 gallon with a bunch of tiger barbs. I think he prefers the harlequins as tankmates.

The sessiflora is growing in very well and the tiger lotus is sporting several new leaves already.

I'll be adding about 7 more harlequins and 6 kuhli loaches in the future.

I've got some frogbit floating in there right now to give the gourami some cover, but I will be replacing that with something more biotope appropriate. I am trying some wisteria right now and may order some water sprite.
