messed up my canopy while staining it you think i can paint?

i stained my newly made canopy and now it looks like crapola sigh. i was wondering if i can paint it black over the stained finish. im thinking that the paint might not stick to the wood since its stained can anyone clarify this for me? oh and what type of paint would be safe for fish. thanks

I would spray paint it with primer and then paint it (I would probably spray paint it). However, I do NOT know how this will work out, so do it at your own risk. But if it was me, I would try it especially if the canopy doesn't look good with the stain, and you have to do something else to it in order to use it. I honestly think that it would probably work, but prime it first.

anyone know if latex paint will work over stained wood? and will it harm fish?

I wouldnt paint over it.... just sand it down and restain it the way you like....

sanding it down is really hard ive already tried. the stain becomes a powder which cakes on the bottom of the sandpaper and makes it really hard to sand. i dont know any other way to make the canopy look ok again which is why i want to paint it now. if you know of any other easy ways of getting rid of the stain please let me know. thanks

Stripper.....course I don't know how good it wood be for the fish. I guess if you aired it out real good it would be ok. You can get it at any HD. The kind I have used you rub it on with steel wool. It takes all the old stain right off. I'm getting ready to redo an antique dresser this way.

so this stain stripper pulls the stain out completely? if it does then im definitely gonna use it. sanding it is a pain.

First paint it with a stain kill product such as Kilz or Binz. These are a type of shellac which will prevent the stain from bleeding thru the paint. If your gonna paint black you could probably skip the stain kill process though. Black lacquer spray cans will do an awesome job and dry quickly. The lacquer drys quick so you can apply the next coat quicker. You can also sand the lacquer with a very fine sand paper between coats to make it look like glass when its finished.

You can paint over the stain, but depending on the stain used I would clean the wood with acetone, hit with a primer and then a good quality paint. After the first covering coat I would do a light sanding/steel wool and then coat it again.

Prep the wood well
Use multiple thin coats
ligtly sand it smooth between coats

The end result should be a great, smooth and shiny paint job.
