Shops in Louisville?

Hello, can anyone recommend a good fish/plant shop in the Louisville area? I just moved here a few months ago and haven't found anything but chain stores.

Default Louisville Shops

Welcome to Louisville!

I'm supposing you've got a phonebook (for addresses, etc), so I'm just throwing out some suggestions.

Sandy's--It's off Popler Level. Used to have great selection of plants and fish. Lately, I've seen a considerable decline in the quality and selection, but I only go maybe once every three months, so it could've just been at an off time.

GreenTree Pet Store--it's across the bridge in Clarksville. Was just Friday; much better plant selection than previously (though, they're still working on it). They've got a broad selection of species, but the tanks are totally overcrowded (which creates its own set of problems).

Feeder's Supply. I know it's a "chain," but at least it's somewhat local, right? They've improved the quality 110% over the past few years. If there's something I want, but they don't have, they're always willing to order it for me.

If you get extra "froggy," there a TERRIFIC place in Lexington (non-chain style) called "Animal House," on Richmond Road. Kevin and Bonnie (I think that's his wife's name) are like the ideal LFS keepers. Always good stock, they know what they're doing and just have a good thing going.

HOpe this helps.

Kev.

Thanks Kev! I have been to a few Feeder's Supplies. I'm on the east side, the one on Shelbyville Rd looks ok, seems like a newer store. I've bought some stuff from the store up on Brownsboro Rd by the Summit and haven't been happy with the fish or the plant selection.

I'll check out Green Tree Pet Store some time. I also found a couple of others in the yellow pages that I'm planning to check out this week and I'm waiting for East End Aquatic to reopen at their new location, I heard good things about them before their move, but they've been closed since before Christmas.

Leaping:

What sort of stock are you looking for?

I've never gone to the East side Feeder's. I'm always at downtown, and occasionally on Dixie. I like both of those. Haven't any experience with the one you mentioned as being closed.

kev: really just basic stuff in clean tanks with a decent selection. I just have an eclipse 12 gallon right now.

I tried to visit three shops in South Louisville yesterday, apparently one had closed because I didn't see it anywhere around the street address in the phone book, it was a sketchy neighborhood anyway.

The Auburndale Pet Center on New Cut Rd was a little shop with lots of tanks, a bit crowded in the shop but the staff was friendly. They had some really nice looking neons there for only $.99, I might go back to get some in a couple of weeks. They had one tank of guppies, no real special specimens there. Not much in the way of plants, they had a few tanks with some moss, some java fern, a crypt or two. They were the only place I have seen Flourish Excel so I picked up a bottle. The also had a HUGE macaw in the front by the register, biggest I have ever seen. I felt a little bad for it, a bird that big you'd have to have a cage the size of a living room. I hope they let it out sometimes. It's beak was longer than my hand. If you like the big African fish like cichlids you might make a visit, they seemed to have a lot of them.

The third one I drove to was Southside Pet Shop, not too far from Auburndale on Southside Drive. This was a bigger store, smaller than a Petsmart but bigger than most independent pet stores. They had some Koi in a few pond tubs outside and some pretty cute purebred puppies. They also had tons of fish, at least 50 tanks. They had the biggest Panda Corys I've ever seen, but they were priced at $12 each. The Neons were pretty small, especially compared to Auburndale, they were probably a lot younger, priced at $.89. Guppies unremarkable, although they did have a few pretty snakeskin males, I don't really like the snakeskin look though. They had some nice looking Rams, I see why a lot of people pick up a pair as accents to their tank, very pretty fish. They did have a few tanks with plants, some hairgrass that looked pretty good. Other kinds of grass, java ferns, hornwort (of course), some bulbs and crypts. Nothing that looked awesome, but better selection than most places. I did not see much of a supplement section though. They did have a lot of pond supplies if you're keeping a pond.

I still plan to visit Green Tree Pet Shop, maybe later today now that all the crazy fireworks traffic is gone.

If I'd have known you were on the hunt for guppies, I had an "explosion" over the past year in my tank. Unfortunately, I got rid of mine on Friday (thank God). All of mine were pure fancies . . . even my females were brightly colored--yellow/red variations, couple half-blacks, etc . . . oops, guess I should've waited.

Anyhow, I don't know that I've struck any of the ones you mentioned. I did make it to Sandy's (right off Popler Level) and they had a few nice things: beautiful male "Giant"/"indian banded" gouramis. The barbs there always look terrific. Of course, they've got the usual overabundance of Cichlids, but plenty "standards" for those of who prefer pretty fish over large, aggressive stock--LOL.

Happy shopping!
kev.

Wow I wish I knew about your guppies kev! If you have more let me know, I'd definitely prefer some locally grown ones than stressed out fish store fish. Probably not the best time for me anyway though, I'm battling some columnaris in my tank right now and want to settle that down before adding more fish.

I did make it to Green Tree yesterday. They had a nice store with a decent overall selection, actually three tanks of guppies, more than the other local shops. I would say less overall selection than Southside though, but not by much. They did have more plant selection with many of their tanks having one or two live plants in them. However I was saddened to see they were selling dyed fish at Green Tree. Personal preference I guess but I prefer not to go to places selling injected fish.

I did pick up some Lace Rock at the Feeder's Supply on Shelbyville Road yesterday for my plants. I was looking for some smooth river stones and I know I saw some somewhere, but couldn't remember where. The lace looks good anyway and is more porous. Got all my new plants tied down with fishing line last night and now just waiting for them to fill out a little.

Oh, wow--didn't notice Green Tree selling those dyed/tattooed fish. Yikes. I pretty much refuse to deal with folks who encourage that insanity. Have to make a note of it.

I handed off my growing guppy population in total, so I'll have no more for awhile. Heck, I didn't even keep a female around for automatic live food for the Paradise fish, but oh well.

Good luck with curing the ailments in the tank. I'll have to check out the Southside place.

Amazing assortment of healthy plants. Riccia, Russian Moss Balls, Madagascar Lace, Swords galore, lots of nice stem plants, dwarf hairgrass and so much more that I cannot even remember.

We went to 4 pet stores in Louisville Saturday. We went to Pets Galore wasn't real impressed with their stock. They had alot of cichlids not much else. We also went to Sandy's pet shop picked up a few fish and plants. Then to Noah's Ark pets they had a large selection of fish not many plants. Picked up a real nice Ram, an angel and nice guppie pair. And then we went to Petsmart on Outer Loop. I know it is a chain but I really like their store. The people working the fish department every time we have went have been very helpful and knowledgeable.
