Tetra whisper pf10

Anyone use this filter with a betta? I wanted to know if it creates too much flow for a lone male in a 5g

That's 90 gph which is likely too much flow for a Betta in a 5 gallon but you can just do the ol' water bottle baffle trick on the outflow to divert the current.

I suggest a sponge filter, if you want to throttle the flow install a valve to the air line. That's what I did in my 10gal beta tank.
