I'm looking to upgrade my filter for a 55g heavily planted community tank. Currently using an old Aquaclear 300 HOB filter that is on it's last legs. It seems most of you with successful planted tanks use a canniter type filter. Any recommendations on this, and if so what type of filters do folks out there prefer?

"Rena pimp mode = on!"

Yeah I would get a Rena XP-3 if I were you. Great value, awesome filter for the money. Enough power to run a CO2 reactor on the out-let side of the filter.
