Amazon-ish Biotope-ish "Arroyo Negro"

After years of saving my pennies and convincing the Wife... I finally got my new tank!

Had a custom built 50B from Visio Aquariums (Gardena, CA). All glass with glass-top and custom cabinet/stand. They did a fantastic job- especially on the silicon work (nice clean black silicon).

Here's the equipment list, thus far:

AquaticLife T5 HO 36" (w/timer)
-2 39 watt 6000k bulbs
-2 39 Roseate 650nm bulbs
-3 LED blue moonlight bulbs

Fluval 405 canister filter

In-Line Hydor ETH 200 watt heater

And coming soon...

Ultimate Co2 system from GLA with 10# cylinder
In-line Atomic Co2 diffuser

I'm using Flourite Black Sand and I recently transplanted DHG from my 10g. I'm using the DSM- so far so good. No creepy white fungus growing yet. And after about a week and a good trimming- the DHG is sending out runners.

Pictures to follow- I'll keep you all updated.

Finally got everything planted and running two weeks ago. Had some crazy kinks in the plan. When I flooded my tank after almost two months of DSM with DHG- I had a massive BGA attack overnight. My DHG and foreground substrate looked like a putting green. I dosed Hydrogen Peroxide over a couple of days and the BGA pretty much vanished in no time- sparing the DHG.

Had some other problems with my diffuser, but I fixed them. pH has stabilized at 6.6. I'm at about 2 bps.

Here are the first couple of photos:

Thank you, frrok! Actually, when I saw that piece of wood at my LFS, Iwagumi is the first thing that popped into my head. It's actually two pieces of wood, the second one (on the right) happened to fit with the piece on the left- almost like a puzzle.

Default UPDATED **02-28-2012** (Pic Heavy, 800x600)

Ok, I have a long overdue update. I have made a lot of changes to the tank. A LOT.

First and foremost, I removed a ton of the Cabomba. I never really intended on keeping so much of it, as it is difficult to maintain. It did help jump start my tank though. I lost the Furcata in several bouts with green water and other algae attacks. I do plan in replenishing the Furcata within the next few months. The Caroliniana did survive every algae fight and came through like a champ. I have two healthy bushels of green and purple cabomba going strong.

I let the Cabomba and DHG take over while everything established for about a month. No trimming- just regular 50% water changes. It jungled out in December- here's what it looked like:

Scary! I know. Even scarier... at night!

Did I scare you off? Are you still with me? Ok, good. Read on.

Over the next couple of months- I went to work, inside and outside of my tank.

1)Built RG Reactor and replaced inline reactor- no more 7up tank. Low working pressure. Low bubble count.

2)Redid all the tubing/plumbing downstairs. Re-positioned my outflow nozzle and intake.

3)Suspended my lighting. This did wonders for my tank. Algae is minimal. Plant growth rate stabilized. Plants grow more upright. Fish are less timid. And more importantly- it looks cooler Ok well, that's not the most important thing, but it does look cleaner.

4)Heavy sword planting along the back- I love swords. Swords are cool. Did I mention I love swords?

5)Aggressively trimmed back the DHG, leaving a center patch in the middle foreground. DHG was growing in every nook and cranny. Even inside of my hollow driftwood piece.

6)Re-positioned the green cambomba to the right front corner and the purple to the left front corner. It's easier to maintain in this position. I also like how it "frames" the tank. The purple is still growing in, but is doing great.

7)Moved the driftwood. The large center piece is now in the back right corner- upright. This piece is hollow and knotted on the inside. It looks like a "stump". Now it's utilized by all the fish and it's not just "Camp Corydora". When I moved it, a tiny baby cory jumped out. Hello new addition!
The smaller piece was moved off to the left. This gave my tank more space and broke it up into thirds.

8)Added a school of Black Skirt Tetras. At first they scared the glowlights into hiding and wouldn't allow them to eat. That ended after a week and now everybody is friendly. The Skirts actually turned out to be good schoolers, more so than the Glowlight "rabble".

9)Added some Amazon Frogbit from the SnS- thank you h4n!

Ok! So here we are today. Thanks for hanging in there with all that reading. Whew! Onto the pics:

Voila:

Completely different looking tank from December:

Corner driftwood:

The left piece of driftwood:

Sideview, Bleheri is growing in strong:

This is my tank supervisor. He monitors all water changes, feeding sessions, etc.:

So what's next? More plants, more rearranging, new fish (Hatchets, rummynose, bolivians), rocks. It's all coming down the pipe.

Ok, that's all for now. Thanks for checking in.

Sketch, they did grow fast as hell. Actually- that's an understatement. Especially with the way my lighting was setup prior to rearranging everything. I now prefer smaller bushels of stem plants (maybe 8-10 stems max). Less trimming and more time enjoying! Thank you for the comment- and sorry for the late response... I must have cancelled my subscription to my own journal... doh! Resubscribed. :

Default More Random Pics from Today (800x600)

A fat Oto is a happy Oto.

More B. Skirts

Enough with the Skirts

Ok, one more with the Skirts, but I like this angle

A rare Peppered Cory daytime appearence

The newbie is starting to forage around a little more during the daytime. I don't know how long he was living inside of that driftwood piece.... 2 months?

I'm a fan of fanwort.

The stump. It's becoming a popular hangout.

Some of my Glowlights.

Front shot. Got to love that coloring.

The new Amazon Frogbit, courtesy of h4n.

Sword stem growing out the back. I'm guessing the white portions are flowers. It's also attempting to grow a daughter plant, which looks a bit mutated due to the emerged growth.

Yup, that's all!

Your tank is fantastic! May I suggest a black background? It will really make your swords pop! Any updates?

You need pair of rams or checkerboard cichlids. Their colors would contrast perfectly with everything else in there.

Woah! I love it!
You say your peppered cory is a rare appearance-how many do you have in there? <10, then you need to up the number. They are schooling fish.
If you do have more than ten of peppered cories, thats one freaking shy cory.

You tank is looking nice and you have a thick patch of DHG, I've never had good luck growing it or should I say my fish like to pull it out. That's a cute dog too!

I've actually lost count of my cories. They've breed a few times and a couple of fry have made it into adult hood. I'm guessing I have 8 or 9? They're pretty shy during the day and they hang out in the shade of the driftwood and swords. I took those photos during the day, but at night they rule the substrate and school all over the tank.
