Well, you are required to own a tank that uses dirt so I guess that is an expense.. :-)

not really,

someone could get a tank given to them, dig some nice compost or rich dirt out of their yard and then dig some sand out of a creek or their kids sandbox. collect hardscape, flora and fauna from the wild. feed the fish small insects, worms, larvae. steal water from their neighbors well, and have the tank sitting next to a bright window, run a drop cord for the filter and heater to their other neighbor.

I think that would get a no expense tank...

Would Peat be considered dirt? I have a shrimp tank I used peat in and then covered with ecocomplete. The rooted plants love the peat, but I guess I don't think it is really dirt.

I think of peat as dirt - I used MGOPS, and that's mostly peat (if not all - lol)

I never started a thread yet but yesterday I dug up the field across the road from my home and got it soaking right now! But since I am putting together a 300 gallon tank I got alot of dirt I need to mineralize first! But I will be added to faternity soon! Maybe I will take some pics and start my journal today!
